Hunter Army Airfield is offers an 11,000 foot runway to assist the 3rd Infantry Division from nearby Fort Stewart to deploy soldiers and cargo worldwide. NASA had appointed Hunter as an alternate landing site for the Space Shuttle orbiters. Other units stationed at Hunter Army Airfield include the 260th Quartermaster Battalion and the 177th Air Control Squadron. Hunter Army Airfield is located near Savannah, Georgia and works in conjunction with nearby Fort Stewart. Housing at Hunter Army Airfield has 5 neighborhoods with over 600 family housing units. To apply for on-post housing, military personnel are required to contact the Balfour Beatty Community Management Office at 912-459-2133 or apply in person. For military personnel filling out the housing application, applicants are placed on a waiting list. The Housing Referral Office can help those personnel seeking off-post housing. Homes for sale or for rent are offered, and the referral office can help with applicable BAH rates for available properties. Temporary lodging is provided through the Hunter Lodging office in 30 two bedroom suites. Families can stay in temporary housing for up to 30 days with approval. There are currently no schools on post for residents of government housing. Children living on post must attend one of the Savannah public schools. Bus transportation is provided for children who live on post but attend off-post schools. Several private schools and magnet schools are offered as well as home schooling options. For more information, contact the School Liaison Officer at 912-767-6533. The Hunter Army Airfield Child Development Center is located in Building 1284 and offers full day care, hourly care, and pre-K programs as well as school age services for children of all ages.
